We are organizing a ride starting in South Africa, probably the first week of December 2013. It will be summer time there and it should be a 5 to 8 day event, and will cross over into at least one of the neighboring countries (most likely Botswana or Namibia). Bikes can be rented relatively cheap (1000 SA Rand = about $150 USD) for a 650GS for a week. The trip will go through some game preserves that have the Big 5 African wild animals. US citizens do not need a visa to travel to South Africa, but you do need to have a valid passport. This is being set up by colleagues of mine who live there and have been trying to get me there for a ride for the past few years. RSVP here if interested.

Oh dear. Any concept of what travel expenses would look like?

Delta flies from Atlanta to Johannesburg on a regular basis, four or five days a week. If you book early enough the airfare isn't too unreasonable. South African Airways also has several flights a week and they may be cheaper, and they are a very reputable and safe airline company. I think they fly out of Washington DC. We are planning on camping or staying at some lodges overnight. Most everything else - food, drinks, hotels - are relatively cheap there, although gasoline is about double.
